BRONTË INSPIRATION

The village of Haworth offers an idyllic setting for a leisurely stroll, with a charming steep cobbled main street where you can follow in the footsteps of the Brontës. There are lots of tea rooms and cafés where you can grab a bite to eat and enjoy the awe-inspiring Yorkshire scenery.  It is worth noting that Branwell Brontë, one of the Brontë siblings, was a regular patron at the Black Bull.

Stop by at Saint Michael and All Angels' Church it is associated with the Brontë family, who lived nearby at the Parsonage. The church contains a crypt where all the family members, except Anne Brontë, are buried. Notable features include the American Window, which is dedicated to Charlotte, and a memorial for the Brontës carved by John Brown, a friend of Branwell Brontë. The chapel is still actively used and offers a great opportunity to experience the Brontës' history.

The Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth is a must-see for any Brontë fan. Located in the house where the Brontës grew up, the museum is filled with original artefacts related to the family's life and writings.  You can wander around the rooms, take part in some fun activities, and even pick up a souvenir from the gift shop.  As an added surprise, the museum garden features a fascinating sculpture by the talented Jocelyn Horner, immortalising the iconic Brontë sisters.

To fully experience the world of the Brontës, you can follow the Brontë Connection Trail, a self-guided walk. This is a chance to better understand their literary works by walking through the landscapes that inspired the sisters.  One highlight of the trail is the hike up to Top Withens, which is believed to have been the inspiration for the setting of Wuthering Heights.  From this vantage point you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the heather moorland. Another point of interest along the trail is Brontë Waterfall, a popular destination for hikers, the Brontë Bridge, and a unique rock formation called Brontë Seat, where Charlotte Brontë is said to have written poetry.  For more adventurous walkers there is also The Brontë Way, a long-distance trail that runs through West Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Visit Thornton village the Brontë Birthplace, and explore Thornton Bell Chapel Churchyard, which has the remains of the church where Patrick Brontë was a curate and where the Brontë siblings were baptised.  In St James' Parish Church, you'll find a small exhibition of Brontë memorabilia. And while you're in the area, visit the impressive Thornton Viaduct. It's a unique S-shaped viaduct that stands out on the Great Northern Railway Trail, a six-mile walking and cycling route along the South Pennines.

Discover East Riddlesden Hall a historic 17th-century house with gardens in Keighley.  It became famous as a filming location for the film version of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights in 2009.  The house and surrounding grounds remain unchanged and attract many literature and film enthusiasts.
