Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart's downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both. Often taking a few creative liberties with historical accuracy, director Miloš Forman and screenwriter Peter Shaffer construct an elegant fable of genius and mediocrity.

When released in 1984 it swept the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Abraham. It remains well regarded as a biography of the composer as well a treatise on artistic creation, while also being delightfully flamboyant in every manner, making for a thoroughly enjoyable film.
