Doctor Zhivago

About

Experience the sweeping historical romance against the dramatic backdrop of the Russian Revolution with David Lean’s enduring epic.

In early 20th-century Russia, the film tells the poignant story of Yuri Zhivago (Sharif), a doctor and poet whose life is dramatically altered by the upheaval of war and revolution. Although married to another, Yuri falls in love with a political activist's wife and experiences hardship during World War I and then the October Revolution. The film explores love, loss, and survival in a world torn apart by conflict. Despite the grim and brooding background however, the film has a surging buoyant spirit and is a masterpiece of emotional resonance and melodramatic romanticism.

Shot in 35mm Panavision, using 35mm Panavision cameras and lenses and presented in vibrant Technicolor, Doctor Zhivago offers a visually breathtaking experience which is evident in this 2015 digital restoration in 4K. The film’s grand cinematography, with its expansive landscapes and intricate period details, showcases Lean’s masterful direction.

Critically and popularly acclaimed for its sweeping narrative and lush visuals, Doctor Zhivago received five Academy Awards, including Best Score for Maurice Jarre’s unforgettable music. It remains a landmark in epic cinema, however ‘epic’ seems too small a word for the sweeping ambition and romance of this classic.
