Burley in Wharfedale was formally a small agricultural village. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, Burley developed into an industrial village, with many residents employed at Greenholme Mills, cotton mills. Today, the village is an excellent starting point for exploring Ilkley and the Yorkshire Dales.Burley in Wharfedale, a Walkers Are Welcome village since 2014, will provide you with easy access to some of the area's wonderful walking and running routes, including pathways up around Ben Rhydding and to Ilkley Cow and Calf Rocks. In the opposite direction, you can reach the Otley Chevin Forest Park. The village is also part of the Fairtrade Way and is close to several Walkers are Welcome routes, including the 28-mile circular Welcome Way.
The Sun Lane Nature Reserve is located in the village, close to Catton Woods. A lovely reserve that is home to many wonderful flowers, including water violets and Marsh-orchids, as well as many birds, butterflies, and other fauna.
The village also hosts a summer festival, which often includes Walkers Are Welcome tours, art and craft events, and a scarecrow trail.
Along the main street, you'll find a variety of refreshment options such as pubs, shops, and cafés.
