About
Alison Welsh’s practice stems from her experience of working within the fashion industry as both designer and educator. She has left the world of fashion behind and now focuses on producing work that sits within the arena of craft and design. She works primarily with hand woven textiles and repurposed garments to create textile installations. However, clothes remain central to this exhibition, as do the people that currently strive to create original fabrics with integrity and immense skill.
‘Unmaking’ reflects on the tensions between craft, fashion and mass production. Maintaining creativity, originality and attention to detail has become increasingly difficult as a result of accelerating mechanisation. The exhibition contains a range of projects from the last decade, some made in collaboration with highly skilled textile artisans in India and Thailand, some made in response to Welsh’s collection of vintage garments, and others focusing on the textile manufacturing legacy of Bradford.
