The Story Of Bradford To Unfold In Words And Music At Upcoming Son Et Lumière Historical Pilgrimage

On Saturday 3rd February, at 6:30pm, Bradford Cathedral will be holding an evening pilgrimage around the sacred space, where Christians have worshipped for almost 1,400 years.

The Son et Lumière event will reveal the story of Bradford and its cathedral. This story will unfold in words and music, with those taking part traveling around the space through this historical pilgrimage.

As part of the multi-sensory experience, you will hear the prayers, poetry, stories, hymns and music of former times, and there will be opportunities for reflection and contemplation as you experience movement and stillness, sound and silence, symbols, story and song in this beautiful, spiritual place.

Maggie Myers, Bradford Cathedral’s Director of Education and Visitors, says: “We introduced this historical pilgrimage around the building in February 2020, just before we closed due to COVID, and it was very popular. Participants really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the Cathedral in a completely different way.

Not only is there the opportunity to travel through the building at night and in semi-darkness, but there is also beautiful music - some of it at a distance - and prayers, poems and information about the Cathedral and its role in Bradford in former times. It is a unique experience and we are really happy to be bringing it back for new audiences."

Graham Thorpe, Bradford Cathedral’s Director of Music, says: “We are really looking forward to this pilgrimage through the Cathedral, using music and words to bring to life the history of Christianity in Bradford. The music chosen spans almost 1,000 years, from medieval plainchant through to music written for the choir last year.”
