Wave of Nostalgia in Haworth, the North of England’s Best Independent Bookshop 2024 has pulled together a fantastic schedule of book-based events for young and old to entertain and inform this summer holidays.

The month kicks off at 7PM on Wednesday 7th August when author Graham Watson gives a dramatic new twist to the story of Haworth’s most famous resident, Charlotte Bronte, in his new biography The Invention of Charlotte Bronte; Doomed survivor of a family of geniuses, Charlotte Brontë had a life as dramatic as Jane Eyre. Turning her back on her tragic past, she reinvented herself as an acclaimed writer, a mysterious celebrity and a passionate lover. Doing so meant burning many bridges, but her sudden death left her friends and admirers with more questions than answers…

Later in August at 7PM on Thursday 22nd, Wave of Nostalgia host fan of football, comedy and lesbian history, Kirsty Loehr, author of A Short History of Queer Women. Queer women have been written out of history since forever. From Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the seas together disguised as pirates, to US football captain Megan Rapinoe declaring ‘You can’t win a championship without gays on your team’ to Charlotte Bronte’s relationship with Ellen Nussey, A Short History of Queer Women sets the record straight on women who have loved other women through the ages. Who says lesbians can’t be funny?

On the afternoon of Sunday 25th, journalist and author Sharon Wright, who began her career on the Keighley News, will update us all on her latest research on the incredible women who were pioneers at the birth of aviation. Her book The Lost History of the Lady Aeronauts tells their fascinating and inspiring story in an accessible and entertaining way. The highlight is bound to be Sharon’s new discoveries about the mysterious death of young balloonist Lily Cove who plunged to her death while performing at Haworth Gala in 1906.

The final event is a free one for the kids when local author Liz Flanagan launches the third in her magical and mysterious ‘Wildsmith’ series for anyone over the age of six – The Hidden Sea. At 2PM on Saturday 31st August she’ll be telling us more about our favourite Wildsmith’s fabulous adventures – this time Rowan herself needs rescuing!

Wave of Nostalgia owner Diane Park is really looking forward to a fantastic summer. She says “Haworth is a great place to visit at any time of year, but it’s really buzzing in the Summer holidays. To make sure all our visitors (and locals!) are kept entertained, we’ve put together what we believe is great mixture of events with something for everybody. Do come along and take part”.  She adds “For anyone who can’t make it to Haworth for the events, most will also be shared on on Zoom
