Charlotte Furness Talk

About

Charlotte has written two books about women’s history in connection to the English Country House, this talk will explore the role of women in this setting as well as introducing the audience to some of the women featured in her books.

Her book Lady of the House (2018) explores the role and experience of married women within country houses and Unmarried Women of the Country Estate (2020) explores the lives of elite women who decided not to marry. Both books feature the stories of real women such as Harriet Leveson Gower (daughter of the infamous 5th Duchess of Devonshire), Elizabeth Manners, the 5th Duchess of Rutland from Belvoir Castle, Anne Lister (who was featured in the TV drama ‘Gentleman Jack’), and more.

Her aim was to write non fiction that was accessible and engaging and so her books are written in a narrative style.

The talk will cover the absence and re-emergence of female narrative within country house history, stories of the women she has researched, and will give time for attendees to ask questions.

There will also be an opportunity to buy her books and of course get them signed!
